How do I deal with ground ivy?

Ground ivy is commonly found in moist, shaded environments where turf is thin. However, it can also be found in areas of full sun. Primary growth occurs in the spring and fall but can be found throughout the growing season. Ground ivy has kidney shaped leaves with purplish colored flowers that appear in bunches of threes.

Prevention practices

  • Use at least two native turf grasses for your lawn

Non-chemical and mechanical controls

  • Hand pull weed when ground is moist
  • Use a sod lifter (a hand tool) or a sod cutter (a power tool) to remove the ground ivy followed by reseeding or installation of sod.
